Find affordable insurance cover with a DR10 conviction

We know that many drivers with a DR10 conviction are otherwise responsible drivers who may have made a one off mistake. A DR10 conviction may have been as a result of driving the morning after the night before or a one off misjudgement.

However, insurance companies do not see it this way. Insurers will class drivers with a DR10 conviction as a higher risk & increase premiums to reflect this, sometimes astronomically.

Alternatively, some insurance companies actually refuse to insure DR10 convicted drivers. As a result, it can be difficult & costly to insure a vehicle with a DR10 on your driving licence.

It needn’t be! Compare quotes & receive insurance quotes from a dedicated panel of convicted driver insurance specialists. All insurance companies specialise in providing insurance cover to drivers with convictions. Insurance comparison for convicted drivers.

How long do I need to declare a DR10 conviction to insurers?

5 years, however, a DR10 endorsement will remain on your driving licence for a period of 11 years from the date you were convicted of the offence. If you commit another drink driving offence within 10 years you will be classed as a high risk offender and will be banned for a minimum period of 3 years.

While a DR10 endorsement will remain on your driving licence for 11 years, you only need to declare it to insurance companies for a period of 5 years beginning from the date of conviction.

This is because, after a period of five years your DR10 conviction will be classed as ‘spent‘ under the  Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Spent convictions do not need to be declared to insurance companies when obtaining quotes & purchasing motor insurance.

It is an unlawful breach of statutory duty for firms to rely on endorsements relating to spent convictions in order to disadvantage a driver.

How to find out the date you received a DR10 endorsement?

You can view your driving record online. You need your driving licence number, national insurance number and your postcode.

Your online driving record will tell you:

  • the name of the court at which you were sentenced
  • the date you were convicted of drink driving
  • the date you were sentenced for the offence
  • the exact length of the driving disqualification you received
  • the start and end dates of your disqualification
  • the date the DR10 endorsement will be removed from your driving record

Your driving record holds details of any and all offences, penalty points, convictions and disqualifications that still remain on your licence.

A DR10 driving licence endorsement will remain on your driving licence for a period of 11 years running from the date of the conviction.
